On Saturday, June 6th , Denman will welcome back Tsalagi scholar and comedian Jeff Ganohalidoh Corntassel and special guests for a community comedy showcase at the Front Hall.
A group of local residents will strut their comedic stuff alongside guest performers in an exploration of how Indigenous and non-Indigenous people express humour. Jeff will play host to a lineup of Indigenous comedians —including Barry Underwood, Mary Wisforden, Romaine and Tracy Underwood—along with special guest Mike Dubbs. They will be accompanied by local luminaries Megan Rose, Lee Andra, Heather R., Juliet, and Joan in what promises to be a hilariously transformative experience.
By day, Jeff is a Professor of Indigenous Studies at UVic, where his research and teaching focus on “Everyday Acts of Resurgence” and the intersections between Indigenous internationalism, community resurgence, climate change, gender, and community well-being. By night, you can find him doing stand-up at venues around Victoria, producing comedy fundraisers for Indigenous communities on the front lines, and running Laughter is Medicine workshops with Ratfish Comedy producer Mark Robertson.
